So why do most of us common mortals store our pills just any old way?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s not that we\u2019re bad, it\u2019s just that we don\u2019t know!<\/strong><\/h4>\n

This article lists 6 important NO NO’s related to storing medicaments. A quick but attentive read gives you\u00a0and your family\u00a0the best protection for\u00a0getting well safely.<\/p>\n

So, here goes:<\/p>\n

1. Don\u2019t<\/span><\/strong> store your medication in your bathroom. Humidity is a power killer!<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. Don\u2019t<\/strong><\/span> leave your pills on the backshelf of your car, even if it\u2019s a handy place right now. Direct light gives bad vibes to medicaments!<\/strong><\/p>\n

3. Don\u2019t <\/strong><\/span>store pills in your vehicule\u2019s glove box although it may be a neat storage place. And don’t hide them away at a seemingly convenient location, such as a cupboard outside on your balcony.\u00a0Excessive heat and freezing alters your medication’s properties.<\/strong><\/p>\n

4. Don\u2019t<\/strong><\/span> ever leave pills lying around on coffee tables. Put them\u00a0out of reach of little agile fingers! You never know when the neighbour\u2019s little Fritzli zooms in for a short visit, or when the grand-children turn up unexpectedly. Make sure you store all your family\u2019s\u00a0medicaments at the same (safe) place.<\/strong><\/p>\n

5. Don\u2019t<\/strong><\/span> forget to read the label provided by the manufacturer.\u00a0Make sure you don’t interrupt the cold chain if your medication needs to be kept cold. This means that – once collected at the Pharmacy – you must not let pass too many hours before storing it\u00a0in the fridge. Check carefully whether you need to observe\u00a0a specific temperature range.<\/strong><\/p>\n

6. Don\u2019t<\/span> <\/strong>leave a cotton plug in a medicine bottle. This can draw moisture into the container<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And whilst we are into Dont’s<\/span>, let\u2019s give ourselves a real fright with the grapefruit story!<\/h1>\n

The strange \u201cgrapefruit effect\u201d was first discovered entirely by accident.<\/p>\n

Here is an extract of an article published on the topic by the Smithsonian Magazine <\/a>(March 2012).<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0As part of a 1989 study, scientists at London\u2019s Victoria Hospital were attempting to discover whether ethanol\u2014the molecule responsible for the intoxicating effects of alcoholic drinks\u2014could negatively interact with a drug called felodipine, developed to treat high blood pressure.<\/p>\n

They happened to use grapefruit juice to mask the taste of the alcohol, and discovered unexpectedly high levels of the drug in the blood. After further investigation, they realized it wasn\u2019t the alcohol causing the surge\u2014it was the grapefruit.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

In a nutshell:\u00a0 Don’t swallow a pill\u00a0together with a glass of grapefruit juice. Doing so has (for some medicaments) a booster effect and can be like taking 20 tablets.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
