Ensure you&rsquo;re able to identify the needs of your shipment by its unique characteristics.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1. Consider ACTIVE versus PASSIVE cold chain configurations.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>One of the key decisions you need to make is whether an active or passive shipping system is needed. In our next article <em>Getting cold chain shipping right\u00a0| Active versus Passive cold chain configurations (2\/3)<\/em>, we compare the two systems, allowing you to get an overview of the key elements that lead to an informed decision. Suffice it to say here that <strong><em>passive<\/em> shipping configurations<\/strong> are manufactured systems, in other words an insulated packaging design with poloystyrene, polyurethane or vaccuum insulated panels. <strong><em>Active<\/em> shipping configurations <\/strong>are usually leased containers with advanced temperature controls that are powered by electricity and\/or battery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Don&rsquo;t cut corners with packaging systems.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We&rsquo;ve come across situations where shippers added cold packs to insulated packaging, assuming that it will keep the shipment cold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This is a gamble if the system has not been <strong>qualified<\/strong>\u00a0under the conditions you require.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Also, when you have a commodity that needs to be kept at refrigerated temperatures, it may not be appropriate to use a packaging system\u00a0designed for\u00a0dry ice conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Avoid bad outcomes<\/strong> by selecting packaging designs that are <em>certified <\/em>for maintining the required temperature range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Don&rsquo;t over-engineer your packaging systems.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Controversely, some shippers may be using packaging configurations that are too sophisticated and usually too costly for a customer&rsquo;s needs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>It&rsquo;s not cost effective<\/strong>, for instance, to use a packaging system that will maintain temperature for 72 or 96 hours for shipments that are likely to be delivered within 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Also, using a large active shipping configuration when a passive system is sufficient, leads to unnecessary costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">For example, you pay a lot of empty payload space if you can&rsquo;t maximise the unit&rsquo;s capacity.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">3. DO cost versus value analysis for each shipment.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1156 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nvlogistics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Exclamation-Mark.png\" alt=\"Exclamation Mark\" width=\"116\" height=\"95\" \/>If your current company policy determines that it&rsquo;s simpler to have <strong>one single packaging configuration for global shipments<\/strong>, we recommend that you do your company\u00a0 favour by <strong>challenging the underlying assumptions<\/strong> that lead to this company policy. Temperature Monitoring Devices &#8211; Make technology your ally.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Regardless of the packaging system chosen, it is highly recommended that you employ some sort of temperature monitoring device.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Advancements in device monitoring technology provide a variety of options that address the <strong>number 1 concern<\/strong> of most users: <strong>product temperature deviation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The TPL Insight Magazine report we quoted earlier tells us that\u00a0<strong>Reducing or preventing product deviations or excursions<\/strong> is the <strong>top priority for 69% of cold chain clients<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">*TPL Insight Magazine Issue 6, 2014<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">5. Have a Contingency Plan, because the best laid plan of mice and men &#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">go often astray!
